Frontex Reports 37% Decrease in Irregular Border Crossings into the EU by July 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Preliminary Frontex data indicates that irregular border crossings into the European Union declined by 37% during the first seven months of 2026. The agency recorded roughly 61,000 detections at the EU’s external frontiers from January 1 to July 31, a figure that is compared to the same period in 2025. Most prominent migration pathways experienced fewer crossings within this timeframe. These figures serve as the latest indicator of irregular entry attempts across the EU’s external borders.

The Eastern Mediterranean continued to be the most active route, with 20,232 detections, marking a 28% decrease from 28,068 during the same months last year. The Central Mediterranean followed, with 16,454 detections, which is a 55% reduction from 36,656. Collectively, these two routes represent approximately 60% of all detections recorded at the EU’s external borders. Libya persisted as the primary departure point on the Central Mediterranean route over the seven-month period.

In contrast, the Western Mediterranean saw an increase, reporting 11,217 detections—a rise of 37% from 8,175 in the previous year. Sea crossings on this route reached 8,648, compared to 7,096 in 2025. Land-based detections through June numbered 2,569, up from 1,079. Meanwhile, the Western African route experienced a 60% decline, totaling 4,682 detections. Crossings through the Western Balkan routes fell by 26% to 4,910, and crossings at the Eastern Land Border decreased by 44% to 3,209.

Mediterranean corridors lead in EU border detection figures

Additional data concerning Channel crossings toward the United Kingdom revealed another significant drop. Frontex recorded 22,469 attempted or successful crossings leaving the EU, a 46% decrease from 41,647. These Channel crossing figures are not included in the EU entry totals. The agency also identified 281 detections along the circular route to Albania, which is a 9% increase. The seven-month data exclude extraordinary border events in Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its statistics on preliminary EUROSUR data and estimates available as of Aug. 4, with potential revisions later as authorities update the information. It is important to note that these figures count detections rather than unique individuals, meaning one person can appear multiple times if crossing at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction is consistent across the agency’s external-border dataset and is crucial when comparing route totals with the overall number of individuals involved.

Seven-month data affirms ongoing decline in first-half of 2026

The current data set confirms the trend observed after the initial six months of 2026, when Frontex reported over 49,000 irregular border crossings, also representing a 37% decrease compared to the previous year. At that time, detections on the Western Mediterranean route were 17% higher than in the previous year. The seven-month comparison now indicates a 37% increase in that route. The Western African route saw a 67% decrease through June and a 60% decline through July.

According to the agency, roughly 3,800 officers from Frontex are deployed at the EU’s external borders. Their responsibilities include supporting national authorities in border control and life-saving sea operations. Additionally, Frontex personnel assist member states with compliance under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest statistics reveal that overall route trends continue to vary, with significant declines across most major corridors but a rise on the Western Mediterranean route.
