VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is preparing BEACONSAT, the country’s first military satellite and its largest domestically developed spacecraft to date. The satellite will detect and analyze interference affecting global navigation satellite systems, including GPS and Galileo. Austria plans to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project focuses on identifying jamming and spoofing signals from orbit and gathering data on when and where navigation systems face disruption.

BEACONSAT will function as a technology demonstrator within a multi-year research and development initiative. Established in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, the company specializes in developing chemical propulsion systems enabling satellites to maneuver in orbit. For BEACONSAT, GATE Space supplies the propulsion unit, satellite structure, and thermal management technology. The company has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Austrian technological expertise underpins the satellite’s core systems
Key components from other European firms contribute to Austria’s inaugural military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN provides high-precision GNSS interference detection and analysis technology. Denmark’s Space Inventor supplies additional satellite parts, including the onboard computer. The project combines commercial space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space via Austria Wirtschaftsservice with approximately 750,000 euros in funding.
The European Space Agency participates by supporting and co-funding the initiative through its ESA Marketplace program, which is aimed at technology demonstrations. This program enables commercially available space technologies to undergo testing for security-related applications. Austrian officials characterize BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an operational satellite system. Its main purpose is to collect data on satellite navigation interference from orbit, which will inform the Defence Ministry’s efforts as Austria advances its military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT Integrates into Austria’s Expanding Space Strategy
Austria’s Defence Ministry is establishing a dedicated unit focused on space services, covering satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is part of this evolving organizational structure, with a particular emphasis on navigation interference detection. The military space strategy adopted in 2023 aims for the Austrian Armed Forces to evolve from solely utilizing space assets to actively operating space infrastructure and services, with implementation expected to extend through 2035 and beyond.
The scheduled launch in February 2027 remains firm, with a Falcon 9 rocket set to carry BEACONSAT into orbit. After deployment, the satellite will gather and analyze GNSS interference data as part of its research mission. The initiative involves Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and specialized European technology companies. This mission will mark Austria’s first military satellite venture, testing domestically developed systems designed to monitor disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation networks.
