    London / Euro Wire/ – According to a comprehensive scientific review, human activity is identified as the primary factor behind the current severe drought affecting the continent, with climate change playing a significant role in worsening drought across europe. A worldwide alliance of climate scientists concluded that unprecedented heat levels are the main cause of these conditions, surpassing the influence of seasonal rainfall deficiencies. European countries are experiencing critically low river levels, widespread water usage restrictions, and large-scale wildfires following a historic June heatwave. Data reveals that a warmer global climate markedly accelerates moisture evaporation from land and water sources, leading to a highly unstable and arid environment. Despite below-average spring rainfall, it was the temperature surges driven by climate change that turned the situation into a severe drought.

    The study published by the World Weather Attribution group emphasizes how rising temperatures actively diminish natural water supplies. Mariam Zachariah, a researcher at Imperial College London, pointed out that the drought is less about a lack of rainfall and more about a warmer atmosphere causing greater moisture deficits on land. This dynamic indicates that drought risks will continue to grow even if rainfall patterns remain relatively stable. Scientists explain that with each 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the atmosphere can hold about seven percent more water vapor, which directly boosts evaporation rates from soil and vegetation across the landscape.

    Using extensive weather data and advanced computational models, researchers compared today’s hotter climate against a hypothetical scenario that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. Their analysis demonstrated that soil dryness in western Europe is now five times more likely than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, similar soil moisture shortages are 11 times more probable. Furthermore, the study revealed that the exceptionally high evaporative demand observed between April and June in western Europe is roughly 80 times more likely. This suggests that rainfall shortages which previously wouldn’t have caused severe droughts now lead to much drier soils.

    Calls for Immediate Global Emissions Reductions

    Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich highlighted that the tendency for unexpected soil drying already begins during spring before the onset of summer. He explained that as temperatures escalate, the atmosphere’s thirst increases quickly, drawing critical moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and soils. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year with extreme heat creates ideal conditions for large wildfires. This rapid land drying primes the terrain for combustion, leading to severe fires across multiple nations. The study confirms that climate change amplifies drought in europe, shifting traditional weather patterns into increasingly hazardous cycles.

    The agricultural industry is under unprecedented pressure due to the widespread depletion of vital soil moisture. Drought conditions are severely impacting farming communities, resulting in historic crop losses across several borders. France, for example, is predicted to see its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, signaling a major disruption to regional food supplies. Meanwhile, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further threatening the stability of the agricultural supply chain. These domestic shortfalls, coupled with ongoing global conflicts, risk driving up food prices and disproportionately affecting low-income households.

    Projections of Continued Warming and Future Risks

    Hydrological impacts are intensifying economic damages, as abnormally low river levels hamper essential cargo transportation networks. Critical waterways face increasing shipping disruptions, underscoring the deepening water scarcity crisis across the continent. Reduced flow in major rivers poses direct threats to energy production, especially in regions reliant on consistent hydropower. Data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed that the recent June was the hottest on record in western Europe. Several nations have already implemented emergency restrictions or temporary bans on non-essential water use to conserve limited supplies.

    The scientific community warns that if global temperatures keep rising, drought conditions could become even more common. Experts stress that these intense evaporation conditions are already occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming. They warn that if global emissions continue at current levels, raising temperatures to 2.8 degrees Celsius could double the likelihood of such conditions. Without swift and substantial cuts in emissions, the continent is headed toward a future of ever-increasing hot, dry summers.
